50 YEARS IN BUSINESS

The Van Lochem Iron business’s roots go back to 1847 in Aalten, The Netherlands on the German border. Horsemen from all over crossed the border to let their horses’ hooves be hammered by the well known farrier. This business expanded and was transformed into an ironmonger shop, which still has a branch in Aalten today.

After the 2nd World War in 1948 Mr. Herman Van Lochem senior, his wife and 4 children immigrated to South Africa, where another 2 children were born. Mr. Van Lochem, at that stage an electrical contractor, started the business Hi-Lite Paint and Hardware in 1961. A variety of products were supplied to the public, including toys, records bicycles and lots more.

From the start, it was a family concern with Herman Van Lochem and his oldest son Gert. Herman Junior joined the business in 1971.

Systematically the core business started to become paint and hardware. In 1978 the shop situated in the Hatfield Galleries in Pretoria measured only 90 sq m in size. From the Galleries, Hi-lite moved nearby to the Old Saambou building for 5 years.

In 1993, Herman Van Lochem junior acquired the property opposite the old Saambou, and on completion of construction, Hi-lite Paint and Hardware moved in and can still be found there. The premises measures 900 sq m in size and is situated prominently on the main intersection of Burnett and Hilda Streets in Hatfield, Pretoria. The company employs approximately 20 people of whom quite a few are family, in-laws and friends of the family.

After 50 years in business, Herman Van Lochem junior attributes the success of the business to personal service delivery. “We aspire to friendliness, uniqueness and quality service, which is relationship driven.”

Hi-Lite Paint and Hardware has moved with the times, and now runs a cutting edge business that is constantly looking at new market trends in the industry and innovative products that will help our customers.

“We wish to thank all our suppliers for 50 years of service and support and look forward to the next 50 years!”
